What differentiates red ale versus amber lager or a German Pilsner from a Bavarian Wheat Ale? The differences are actually as complex or as easy as you want to make them.

Jeff Green from the Labatt Institute talks about the difference between Lagers and Ales.

  • @1978atcarroll Well chicken does taste good :)

  • @ilovemesomechicken You suck chicken dicks.

  • @1978atcarroll Becks sucks

  • @MrTerryKay ...But if you buy Beck's, don't get a six pack. it doesn't sell as fast as the crappy domestics, so it sits on the shelves longer. the six packs are open to light, the twelve packs are protected by cardboard. when i used to buy six packs i'd get skunky beer about half the time. i don't have that problem with twelve packs.

  • @MrTerryKay Beck's

  • @MrTerryKay

Would still like to know about any nice lagers though.

  • Thank you very much for replying. The question was more rhetorical than anything else, but I'm always open to learn (as Dumbo said, - I'm all ears). I tasted 100s of beers (hobby), and usually rate ales from average to almost perfect (for say Innis & Gunn). When I taste lager though they're almost always nasty (my opinion). I don't think it's because their yeasts are bottom feeders (spit). I think it may have something to do with malting. Almost all the black lager I've tried has been delicious.

  • @MrTerryKay Ales are more flavorful because of the top fermenting yeast vs lagers which are more of a clean flavor due to the colder temperatures that the yeast ferment at. If you're looking for flavor, experiment with different types of Ales until you find the one closest to what you're desiring.

  • Why is it SO hard to find a nice tasty lager, yet so easy to find delicious ale. Is it because of the multi-media mass indoctrination by the big lager companies? Can anyone suggest a lager that is full of flavours?
