For women, the lifetime risk of dying of cardiovascular disease is almost one in three. Fortunately, most cardiovascular disease in women is preventable. Kathleen W. McNicholas, M.D., warns women that its time to stop thinking about heart disease as a mans disease. She speaks with the authority of both a doctor and a patient. A seasoned surgeon in her mid-50s at Christiana Care Health System, McNicholas had open-heart surgery herself at Christiana Hospital in 2003.
"Two thirds of women and one third of doctors dont recognize the symptoms of heart attack in females—symptoms that are often more subtle than the classic elephant sitting on your chest," she says.
