"The N900s Maemo platform uses the D-Bus messaging service to allow different applications to send message and alerts to each other. When you send a text to this phone, it transmits the contents of your message over D-Bus to a Python script. The Python script then uses pylast (a library for communicating with last.fm) to send the artists name to last.fm and receive the mp3 files and cover art generated for that artist. The script then controls the screen display and music playback using GStreamer (a library for controlling media playback that is included in Maemo 5.0) and the pygame (an open-source python wrapper for controlling visuals).

Playback to the radio is controlled by the N900s built-in FM transmitter. The transmitter can be set to broadcast at any frequency, an the phones audio will be picked up by any nearby radio set to the right station."

  • nice job. your videos are very interesting showing off cool features\capabilities of the N900. are these videos\python scripts your own work?

and where did you get an n900 :P

  • Some of them are, but the n900 hacks aren't, see the video description for more info.

  • The radio used there was pretty old :), but for what I've seen, the quality of the sound is very good, but it all depends on your region, a clean frequency will help for sure.

  • I use the FM transmitter for music in the car. In my vehicle it is OK but I noticed that in a friend's car it was not so good.

  • Wow!

That's impressive. I love programming in Python and sooner or later I have to get one to those little things in my hands (hopefully when the price goes down a bit).

  • sweet stuff

  • Using the fm transmitter in this way is very cool

  • Hi VDVlinux, what is the sound quality like from the fm transmitter on the N900? Is it stereo and good enough to use in the car for hi-fi quality listening. It was a little hard to tell from your demo there!
