  • I also remember that Listerine was once marketed as a treatment for colds and sore throats...apparently the ingredients in Listerine killed germs that caused sore throats and colds. However, that was proven wrong, and Listerine was forced to run corrective ads saying that "Listerine is ineffective for colds and sore throats and will not lessen their severity" or something similar. Still, people swear by the original amber Listerine (not the flavored kinds) for treating a cold or sore throat.

    sounds like a circulus vitiosus

  • @Woggyflush It was window cleaner, company was going broke, marketing genius saved the company by turning it into mouth wash. If you use it then you destroy your natural flora and bad bacteria take over, causing bad breath. Buy more!

  • @musicfuse If you use this stuff then yes. It causes bad breath, so you buy more.

yes but but surprised me was how they came up with the idea to use a clinical product in a family bathroom in the first place. To me, hospitals are something serious. Connected with being helpless. While the family bathroom stands for safety and comfort. These are 2 worlds in my mind, I wouldn't mix them (I use Listerine though, I guess they hypnotized me).

Not surprising. You can also use 3% hydrogen peroxide (a disinfectant) mixed with water as mouthwash to get rid of canker sores and trench mouth. Not recommended for long-term use, but still used today.

originally, Listerine was first used as a desinfectant in emergency rooms. I'm not kidding, you can Google it. Around 1930, it was marketed for the civilian market as a mouth-wash. VERY strange!
