It's at least five times as insulting as hollowing out the unsigned version! But think about it Dave! If it's in a used bookstore being sold for cheap, the signature is probably fake! But it would have been hilarious if it were real. But if it were real, you didn't actually lose any money... you just lost an opportunity to gain a sudden random sum which probably happens all the time to all of us. Don't sweat it.

If an author wants their books to be treated with respect, they first must treat the craft with respect. Like attracts like.

If it was a first edition, first printing, hardcover and original dust jacket: sure maybe it would be worth that much. But chances are that's not what you've got. And people sell books on Abebooks for ridiculous prices that aren't always accurate to how much the book is actually worth.
