http://dcwi.com/dulcimer - Charlie shows how to tune a mountain dulcimer. The dulcimer is made of 150 year old Indiana tulip poplar wood, and features hummingbird sound holes and Grover tuning pegs. This is the 554th Appalachian or lap dulcimer Charlie has built. Charlie has built over 100 hammered dulcimers and has written an instructional book on how to build them, entitled "Hammer Dulcimers - How I Build the Things."

  • good (and Easy) system to remember for dulcimer tuning

  • You are tuning in ionian mode here, examples of which would be DAA (key of D) or CGG (key of C).

There are several other modes one can tune to in order to play different tunes, but ionian is probably the most practical mode for beginning noter players.

In this particular instance, the poster has tuned to the key of D# sharp, since he is not concerned with trying to match with another instrument.
