Spc. Grant E. Hawkins, 24, passed away on May 17, 2011 in Ft. Polk, LA, after having served his country for four years in the United States Army. Grant, a lifelong Oroville resident, was born on January 1, 1987. A big man with an even bigger heart, Grant was an expert in the field of giving bear-hugs and brightening any room he entered. His exuberant personality and endless sense-of-humor were contagious: he would stop at nothing to put a smile on anyone's face and was quick with a shoulder, hand or jab. An avid outdoorsman, Grant enjoyed fishing: every year on his birthday, he and his dad would catch steelhead trout at the Feather River. In addition to the rod and reel, Grant excelled on the wrestling mat and football field for three consecutive years at Las Plumas High School, where he graduated in 2005. He then volunteered as an intern at The Father's House Church before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 2007, where he dutifully served with the 687th Engineer Company, 46th Engineer Battalion and 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. Spc. Hawkins' service included a 15-month stint in Iraq (June, 2008-September, 2009). Grant is survived by his parents, Terry E. and Teri L. Hawkins; his brother, Colt Hawkins; grandparents Perry Hawkins, Mary Laws and Eva Tull; and step-grandmother Donna Hawkins. Grant's grandfather, Alvin Tull, preceded him in death. A celebration of Grant's life was held on Wednesday, May 25 at The Father's House Church, immediately followed by a military graveside burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Hawkins Family requests that anyone wanting to contribute to Grant's memory would make a financial donation to the ministries of The Father's House Church.
