CHATHAM, MA — An elderly man and woman, both in their 70s, were seriously injured last night after they were struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing Queen Anne Road in the area of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, police and fire officials said.

Both the man and the woman, whom police declined to identify, were "semiconscious" following the crash, a Chatham Fire Department spokesman said, and were transported by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital. The man was later flown to Boston for treatment.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, Amy McHugh, 32, of Chatham was not injured, the fire department spokesman said. The incident occurred on Queen Anne Road at around 6 p.m., just east of the plaza that houses Chatham Village Market. The man and woman were crossing the road at the time, heading to the church from the market, a police department spokeswoman said.

The roadway at that section of Queen Anne Road is very dark, with the only illumination coming from exterior lights at the church.

Edmund Robinson, pastor of the church, said an elderly couple who was expected at the church for a Small Groups Ministry program had not arrived.

After the crash, the blue Ford Explorer was stopped in the oncoming lane of traffic on Queen Anne Road. There were no skid marks in the road and no apparent damage to the front end of the car. McHugh and an unidentified man sat on the steps to the church. The man had his arm around her and appeared to be consoling her.

In the road, about 6 feet from the front of the car, was one man's shoe and one woman's shoe next to each other. Items of clothing that appeared to be jackets or sweatshirts were also in the roadway.

McHugh and an unidentified man spoke to police several times, at one point even sitting in the back of one of the cruisers. They eventually gathered some items from the Explorer and left the scene. Chatham Deputy Chief John Cauble said that police are in the initial stages of the investigation. An accident reconstruction team was called to the scene.
