Astronauts blast off to explore the moon, but they end up landing on Mars. On Mars, evidence of a once powerful civilization is found. The scientists determined that an atomic war destroyed most of the Martians (who surprisingly look like humans). Those that survived reverted to a caveman like existance.

I agree with Pazuzu - it was fun watching this, even with all the analog instruments, cheesy sounds and manual levers to deploy things.
Of course, Lloyd Bridges and Noah Beery, Jr added something too.
I got a kick out of seeing John Emery, the mustached older scientist, too. He's the villain in my favorite cheesy Sci-Fi movie" Kronos. It was produced 7 years later by the same guy, Kurt Neuman.
I would rather watch a viewing of this ancient film then 90% of the garbage that passes as entertainment on TV these days. In fact, I haven't seen this since I was a kid and will watch this on Google video if they have it.
