Harvey and Ellen Ussery have applied permaculture design concepts to their 2 acre homestead in Hume, Virginia. This film is from Nov. 2006 after the Weston A. Price Foundation International Conference in Chantilly, VA. Harvey writes articles regularly for 3 magazines and occasionally for other publications. They have incorporated food production in a green house, from mycellium (mushrooms), foul, fruits and vegetables raised on their homestead.

  • Thanks folks. I intend to get more items up and a program going at my RestorativeAgriculture site, but it is slow going and a lower priority than some other projects like connecting farmers to consumers locally.

  • yay!

  • 'The Foul Contribution' will only be so if improperly managed. Otherwise, fowl make a fine contribution to homesteads or farming operations of all sizes.

  • @CimaraNyx Also, I liked planting my herbs along the walkways so I could smell their wonderfulness each time I brushed by them. Easy access too. I know w/permaculture, you should plant complimenting plants next to each other, really with any gardening you should, but the occasional smell of oregano or sweet basil wafting up as you brush by is truly wonderful!

  • Love it, but guinea are the noisiest birds ever! They hide their eggs, usually 32 at a time, and if you're trying to control your guinea population, it's better to try to find her nest and remove the eggs, because once they hatch, you won't catch the baby guineas. I started with 2 and had over 100 in a few years. Also you get the occasional pure white guinea, which was pretty cool.
