Rachel Maddow on MSNBC gives an unbelievable account of the oil spills we've encountered. When will it all stop?

When faced with oil disaster, drill more
By The Rachel Maddow Show - Wed May 5, 2010 9:27 AM EDT
The Deepwater Horizon disaster could send as much as 60,000 barrels of oil a day straight into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

This looming catastrophe led Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, whose state of Florida is threatened by the volcano of oil, to say Tuesday that he's willing to filibuster an energy bill that expands off-shore drilling. Republicans, meanwhile, say they won't vote for an energy bill that fails to include more drilling. From the Wall Street Journal:

Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.) said legislation can't move forward without three "pillars": expanded oil and gas exploration, more nuclear power and a price on carbon-emissions in exchange for the first two.

"At least temporarily, this has knocked one of the legs of the stool off to the side, so my guess is that nothing proceeds at the moment," Mr. Kyl said.

Mr. Nelson agreed, saying, "It makes it more difficult to get 60 votes," the number to break a Senate filibuster. "You're not going to get offshore drilling in an energy bill."

Some Democrats, like Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, share Sen. Kyl's zeal for drilling. Landrieu's state, of course, is also in the path of the Deepwater Horizon plume -- making hers a kind of hair-of-the-dog cure for what ails you.

  • @Slave2Reason Who is the stupid Slave2Reason who makes stupid remarks?

  • @Hawkflieslow You are a dumbass!Without any government regulations these companies would practice even less safety, cut even more corners than they do right now and you would have bigger leaks more often than you do now.Why should they care they would be under no obligation to clean it up.And yes shrinking resources. The reason these latest generations of rigs have to go so deep is because the easier to get stuff is almost exhausted.what did you think it was infinite?

  • Who is this smug little boy and why did they give him a show?

  • Not that I expected to see this smirking individual come up with any suggestions as to what should be done about the world using oil [note the river boat going by and I somehow doubt that it was propelled by wind] then it mentions ANWR in Alaska and seems to forget that the North Slope has been producing oil since the early 1970s and the pipeline was put into use but it is to lead one to believe that ANWAR is just do remote. This is ignorat or just plain dishonest.

  • This is socialist blow hard talk you heard it quite clearly by Dear Rachel heard it but did not listen. The sound of that boat is human industry and so is the camera she is talking into. Only when people are free to do what every they want without hurting another or their property shall we have a heaven on earth. We do not need to be told how to do it right we already know that and no BGOV plan will get to tell us how to be, what to be, and how to do it. Justis is only with a Free People Nation

  • It is not within the freedoms established by the constitution to allow anyone the power over others activities it is up to the individual to respond to threats real and perceived. Shrinking resources? What shrinking resources? This has nothing to do with shrinking resources it has to do with greed and stupidity. The guys who do the work know how to do it right the money guys and big gov does not. Without BGOV there were be 1000 of oil companies who did it best would get the work. Free markkets

  • @el3m3ntsk8s

Lmfao.... environmentalists don't want to fucking drill oil on the shores at all, you deluded prick. Conservatives want to drill oil far from the shores, close to the shores, on the beaches, in national parks, wherever there's oil!

Blaming environmentalists for this has got to be the fucking joke of the century, really.

  • I can tell you how we can avoid anything like this in the future but the idiotic conservatives are going to have to pull their heads out of their asses: stop using oil as a source of fuel! Fossil fuels are terrible for the enviroment and horribly inefficient, not to mention costly to the enviroment and economy. You do realize that any oil we drill in American waters probably isn't even sold in the U.S.

Enviromentalists are the reason our planet isnt a dump yet, but we are getting there!

  • @el3m3ntsk8s how about instead of drilling you dumb fuck we could have spent more money different on energies that are good for the environment. so we just don''t kill of all the fucking animals.

  • I can tell you what we could have changed but the idiotic environmentalists wouldn't allow it: drilling closer to the shore in places like the fertile fields of Alaska, where we DO have the technology and physical capacity to cap leaking wells. Conservatives like me said "Drill Here, Drill Now!" NOT "Drill 40 miles off shore!"

Thanks a lot environmentalists, you got what you wanted, now we can't clean up the mess YOU'VE caused.
