I've had endoscopy twice, and in both cases they told me I would only be sedated but I actually was put to sleep. Usually nowadays this is done with propofol (Diprivan), which can be used as anything from a strong sedative to general anaesthesia. I sometimes wonder if they tell patients they will not be put completely asleep to reduce anxiety beforehand...I don't know.

Great description! In my experience, though, the IV is really not that painful at all, especially if you relax.

ya well soo i did the endoscopy this morning and it was not as bad as u think it is........the needle did not really hurt it was just a regular needle for the IV and from there is where they put u to sleep......my doctor said i will be half awake but drowsy enough to not remember.....so when i went in thinking i would be awake i fell asleep because the medication is so strong.....you wont remember a thing after the procedure you will just remember b 4 you knock out it actually really fun haha :)

@carolinexx21 Not at all - you dont even remember going to sleep. It's actually really weird when you wake up because it's as though nothing has happend. I actually asked the nurse 3 times if it was over when i woke up.

if you're nervous about it like I was - the worst part of the whole thing is the waiting room
