Ultima X: Odyssey (UXO) was to be a massively multiplayer computer role-playing game (MMORPG) based in the Ultima universe, developed by Origin Systems for Electronic Arts.

The game was cancelled with a letter to fans on June 30, 2004: Dear Ultima X: Odyssey community members, As of today, development on Ultima X: Odyssey has ended. We feel that Ultima Online is where we need to focus our online efforts and most of my team will be moving to the UO expansion pack, the UO live team, and an unannounced Ultima Online project. Development on UO will be greatly enhanced as we consolidate our resources behind that franchise. This isn't an easy decision but its the right move for the future of all things Ultima, including the community and the team. We look forward to sharing our plans for the future of Ultima Online very soon. I would like to thank all of the Ultima X: Odyssey supporters who have been with us from the beginning. to bad they can just realease it for what it is and let the gamers tinker to make it a full game i mean look at all the new MOD ultima games out now why cant we just have it

It would be interesting to see how the release of this game would have affected Blizzard's stronghold on the MMORPG market, as this was an intended 2003 release, I think if they had followed through with it, this could definitely been one of those most successful games ever developed. Shame really.

you know im glad odyssey wasnt released and you know why? ultima (i think) supposed to be an MMO its supposed to be the avatar and his journey but alas i still wish ultima would of gone on longer i mean if it wasn't for Ultima We wouldn't have elder scrolls final fanatsey and games today wouldnt be the same ultima WAS the father of PC gaming and he died with ultima 8 i wish they would remake ultima 8 and 9 and finally released a finale because we as gamers are unsatisfied we deserve an ultima X

I think they saw the financial powerhouse of Blizzard just down the road and realized they couldn't touch the Asian market. I stil lwish they had tried. Possibly they could have offered a more mature mmorpg where elves do not dance like Michael Jackson. Perhaps I am asknig for too much.

@marauderqwerty Just because Garriot was the director doesn't mean he was a genius designer. All I have to do is point at George Lucas and anyone that is anyone will understand what I mean. Garriot gave the idea, but it wasn't him alone that created the world of Ultima. That was the people and developers who made it better than what it is. Starr Long created Ultima Online, for instance, and Garriot had absolutely nothing to do with UXO.

@ChampionSheWolf That isn't fair, Garriot was the director of Ultima VII (part 1 & 2), for me the best RPG games ever.
