EXTREME 4x4 WINTER OFF-ROAD | Experience the winter offroad trip of a lifetime with MOUNTAIN TAXI, Iceland's longest established professional 4x4 offroad jeep tour company.

Few can visit Iceland without failing to be awestruck by the vast array of geological wonders which present themselves at ever turn. From glacial valleys to lava fields, evidence of the powerful forces shaping the geology of Iceland. It is a part of the Icelanders' culture as well as everyday life.

Iceland is a volcanic island perched on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. The rift zone between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates goes right through the middle. As the plates diverge the rift fills by regularly occurring volcanic eruptions. The movement also triggers earthquakes, large and small. Generally Icelanders don't get shaken much by earthquakes, but these are forces they definitely respect. They have adjusted to the companionship of rough natural forces and continue their lives quite undisturbed.

Hot springs are found in many areas around the country; from the seaside to the most remote areas of the glaciers. Many are utilized for house heating, but most just producing boiling water that flows freely into nature, without any interference by man.

Through the centuries the hot water has been used for boiling food and washing clothes and wool on the farms in Iceland. Because of the high temperature of the water (up to 100°C/212°F) great caution is needed in a hot spring area. Not only hot water, but also boiling mud in or underneath the surface can threaten travelers. In the hot spring areas there is more than meets the eye.
