We bought a Featherman power plucker to take the work and mess of plucking chickens out of the task. This is a video clip of the first time we used it. The birds are Cornish-Rock crosses and weigh upwards of 4 pounds each at 8 weeks old.

Before putting the birds in the plucker, they are killed by slitting the jugular vein and then scaleded in a pot of 145 degree water for a minute. The scalding loosens the feathers. There are still a few feathers to manually pull out, like the large wing and tail feathers, but they come out easy. A power plucker makes the job so much easier and neater vs doing it by hand.

  • They were scalded, but not long enough.

Since then we've perfect it and processed a lot of big Cornish Cross birds. The snow is gone here and it is time to start ordering spring chicks!

  • Does this end up breaking the bones? I am starting a chicken "farm" and wanted to do my own processing. Just want to make sure the bodies stay intact.

  • did you scald them, it shouldn't take that long? my uncle and I use that same plucker he did get extra fingers for it though (I think the quail model.
