This is the result of a class assignment - "Build an Electric Motor." The class is ECE301, University of Tennessee, Knoxvegas.

Geeky Description:
Eight permanent (rare-earth) magnets are mounted on the armature so that their poles alternate (N-S-N-S...). A coil (electromagnet) is mounted near the magnets. The coil is fed by a commutator ring. The commutator ring is configured so that the coils' current direction is reversed every 1/8th turn, which causes the coils' (electromagnet) pole to alternate. The timing is arranged so that the coil attracts the next magnet while repelling the last magnet. This causes the thing to spin, which is totally bad-ass considering how worried I was that it wouldn't work.

It took about 16 hours to design and build, stretched across two weekends. I can share the design if anyone's interested.
