Here's a short video clip of Joe Bussard, the leading collector of 78 rpm records and a curator of early American Music. The song playing throughout this piece is "Bull Doze Blues" by Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas. It was borrowed by Canned Heat who made a million with "Goin' Up the Country."

  • some one please tell me this man Joe Bussard is still alive and well. to me I would imagiine he would have some interesting sttories. very rarely do I meet some one with more 78's than me!

  • Yes, he's still alive. He lives outside of DC. I'll introduce you to him if you're in the area.

  • i have a blind lemon jefferson record from approximately 1927 on paramount and i ordered a hokkum boys record on the same lable from ebay ,but the fools who i got it from caused a packing error

  • what does that mean:

packing error? did they break it?

  • i always wondered why i liked that canned heat song...joe seem nearly as careless with his records as i am when i am drunk, but my records sound so good when i've had a few too many to care...

  • joe ain't careless, though he does treat his records with the same love a father gives his 8 year old son: tough love. he ain't afraid to smudge a record with his thumb-print. even so joe's records always sound good.

He's done a show on WDVX in Knoxville TN on Sunday nights at 9 pm (eastern),

which is on line (wdvx.com) and recordable. I have recorded it many times.

I haven't checked lately, but it probably is still on.

  • Incredible.

  • i have heard mr bussard will let anyone who is interested come and listen to his records and bs w/ him. is this true? i would seriously consider making the trip back east to meet him. i really think this guy is something, and once hes gone, so are all those fantastic stories and memories. i really enjoy him and his records.

Cnd Ht,, Henry Vestine was involved in issue of Yazoo LPs, so many of the tracks issued were from Joe

So CH got name fromTommy Johnson, and did Henry Thomas number to make hit.

Its still happening with Seasick Steve, I like the guy, and heard him do great slow blues, very Fred McDowell, but I saddens me to think all those amazing black guys never got the fame they deserved, or were invited on to Top Gear etc, why couldnt Dave Edwards, Lockwood get asked.
