Video cameras installed in the Sumatran jungle have captured close-up footage of a tiger and two cubs, the first time that WWF has recorded evidence of tiger breeding in central Sumatra in what should be prime tiger habitat.

In 2010, WWF is stepping up conservation efforts through a year-long campaign to coincide with the Chinese lunar calendar Year of the Tiger. The goal is not only to stop the disappearance of tigers across Asia, but to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.

  • Awesome! There's only 1500 tigers left in the wild. Poaching is the biggest threat.

  • Tigers are beautiful animals. I'm so happy that WWF does what they can to help this stunning creatures. I really hope their population increases. It'd be a shame to let this wonderful creature go extinct.

  • The tiger, awesome, mystical beast, is central to the story of Dersu Ursula the film of Ichikawa. The planet will be a sordid and tragic place without such creatures.

  • @DaInfoMan11 so, why is WWF bad if it's spending large quantities of money on saving species that are about to become extinct? Explain that to me.

  • @iArianna Apparently the WWF has gotten world leaders like Russia's prime minister etc. to join a new 'Global Tiger Recovery Programme' where they're trying to double the tiger population before the next year of the tiger (2022). They've gotten funds from the world back (100 million USD) and Leonardo DiCaprico donated 1 million USD too! Lets hope with the financial + political support they now have, we can stop the beautiful creature from becoming extinct!

  • @kenyonstreet There's only about 1500 BENGAL Tigers, but about 3,200 tigers in general. Which is terrible, considering that before the 20th century, there was about 100,000!!

Also, deforestation is second of the 2 biggest threats.

  • @kenyonstreet Now there is only 3200 Tigers :D

  • Beautiful specie!

  • Leo and WWF are doing a great job! ♥ Good luck! ♥
