Finally figured out how to record videos in ZSNES. This is my first shot at using Lame and Mencoder, so I apologize if it's a bit...off.

Anyway, the game today is Castlevania: Dracula X, a SNES port of the highly acclaimed Dracula X: Chi No Rondo (Rondo of Blood), for the PC-Engine Turbografx. Sadly, this magnificent piece of art never made it out of Japan. Though a remake was made for the PSP, it just wasn't the same thing. However, Chi No Rondo was recently released on the Wii's Virtual Console, and boy does it live up to the ages.

Dracula X on the SNES is a rather shoddy port of Chi No Rondo in that, being on the SNES, certain things had to be nerfed in quality to make it work. The sound isn't quite as good, the sprites and pixels are the same but the graphics are otherwise rough and lack any real luster, Maria is not playable in the port, and the game is condensed.

However, when judging this game as a stand-alone title and not as a port, it holds up well. Although the levels are smaller than in Chi No Rondo, they are also completely different in layout and mechanics (and they tend to be more difficult, as well). Some boss fights are different as well; in some cases the boss in this port will have attacks that differ from Chi No Rondo, and in some cases the arena you fight them in will be different (the final boss comes to mind here). It plays more like a traditional Castlevania, and it gives up none of that frustrating difficulty we all love so much, thanks to sluggish and limited controls. And the music, lower quality or not, is downright badass. So this game rocks, and anyone who disagrees can talk to the finger.

Anyway, it's basically Castlevania Classic as far as story goes. Dracula rises once every century to grip the countryside of Transylvania in Chaos. The Belmont clan, those that hunt the Night, are the ones that are destined to stop him, using the holy whip, Vampire Killer, which was born from the forbidden arts of Alchemy, requiring the tainted soul of Leon Belmont's betrothed to forge. In this game, it is Richter Belmonts turn to siege the castle and send Dracula back to the fiery pits of Hell. And though Richter has a personal stake in this for reasons that will be made clear as the game progresses, he is pretty determined in his resolve.

This is Stage 1, the opening, and has one of the best soundtracks of any game out there. Enjoy.
