Heath Ledger dead at 28 years old at his New York apartment.
Austrailian Heath Ledger in the upcoming Batman movie in 2008 , star of Brokeback Mountain. Michelle Williams was his former partner. Police suspect Heath Ledger died of an overdose of drugs.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday as family and colleagues mourned the death of Academy Award-nominated actor Heath Ledger.

Ledger was found naked and unresponsive, facedown on the floor at the foot of his bed by a housekeeper trying to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," he told CNN.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Browne later told reporters some prescription medications were found in the room, including sleeping pills.

"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him," Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, told reporters while standing with the actor's mother and sister in Perth, Australia.

"There was no indication of a disturbance," he said, adding that there were no signs that Mr. Ledger had been drinking. Nor were any illegal drugs found in the loft, which takes up the entire fourth floor. Neighbors said Mr. Ledger had occupied it for several months.

Police officials said that a bottle of prescription sleeping pills was found on a nearby night table, but that they did not know whether the pills had anything to do with Mr. Ledger's death. Officers who checked the apartment found other prescription medications in the bathroom. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office said an autopsy would be conducted on Wednesday.

Mr. Browne said no obvious indication of suicide, like a note, was found in the bedroom.

Mr. Ledger had become a familiar figure in his SoHo neighborhood — and something of a fixture in gossip columns — since moving there after he broke up with the actress Michelle Williams, who played his wife in "Brokeback Mountain."

Ledger had last been home to Australia over the Christmas period, which he spent with his family in Perth.

In November he told the New York Times he was not proud of his role in I'm Not There, Todd Haynes's film in which Ledger plays one of six versions of Bob Dylan. He said: "I feel the same way about everything I do. The day I say, 'It's good' is the day I should start doing something else."

The interviewer found Ledger complaining he had been unable to sleep. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going," Ledger said. He confided to the reporter that he took a prescription sleeping pill and, when that failed, took another.

The actor had been travelling between New York and London where he was filming, as recently as last weekend, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus directed by Terry Gilliam. He was also scheduled to appear this year as the Joker in the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight.
