Various clips taken while creating the parts that eventually are used to build an automated 7th axis transfer for this Fanuc Arcmate robot.

The system is driven using an air motor attached to a 1"-5 Acme lead screw, and works on an open-loop principal; the air motor is activated until a series of proximity switches are met, at which point it slows down, then stops after another ~3 inches. We measured the repeatability at just a few thousandths of an inch.

  • Why not just use 2 linear slides?

  • @nhbb980 - Yeah that was an option, especially since the fanuc controller allows expandability for additional axes. The students ended up using the air motor route for cost and simplicity though. Their original plan was hydraulics but that turned out to be overkill...
