I took this video in the evening from my house in Lochgelly, Fife of the Flaring at ExxonMobil's Fife Ethylene Plant, Mossmorran, Cowdenbeath, Fife, in September 2007. This lasted about a week and happens quite a lot. We were told at a meeting that besides for the maintianace shutdown for 2 weeks once a year the flaring only happens when there is a fault and the system start flaring automaticly. this happens a lot. What a waste of energy.

  • "Just a thought" It`s just a pity they are not Recycling the waste Energy and put it to a good use, like using it to Produce Electricity to use in the plant and any extra into the national grid. There is also some place down south that uses the waste energy to grow tomatos. Could not something like this use the waste energy of the plant. "Just a thought"

  • its a shame people have to open there mouth when they have no idea what the hell their talking about. i say we start sending it down the pipeline right after its fraked... lol maby after the line washes out u people that dont work in the patch will shut the f up.

  • Ok fair enough the guy din't know shit about the O&G industry. Neither do I but the fact is - there's obviously a shitload of energy in the gasses there. Whether they're waste gasses, proofing the field, byproducts or even overproduction is irrelevant. You could still just as easily run thet shit through a gas turbine attached to a generator and exhaust it at the top of the stack so you get a good low pressure to help run the turbine harder. Energy from waste. That's what the buggers on about.

  • @Twiztid1357 Hi, I was wondering if you could shed some light, (pardon the pun) on an unusual event (most likely linked) to Mossmorran early this morning? The noise was unlike anything I have ever heard before! It sounded as if the Sky was coming down! It lasted for a good 20-odd minutes or so before the Burners were switched on. It woke people as far as Kelty & Crossgates! It was terrifying & the Police said they were inundated with calls. It sounded as if it was going to blow! Seriously!

  • We do that for various reasons where I work.. something over pressures, blowing something down, or a psv pops.. that was little lol.

  • I agree, it seems like you should be able to use this energy but it's too dirty and unstable to feed into a machine. Turbines and boilers need predictable amounts of clean gas. This stuff is extremely variable in pressure, it's dirty and full of poison. In order to even out the quality and pressure you need..well, the rest of the refinery! What you see burning is the stuff that's too extreme in quality and pressure to be allowed in.

  • why do they do that for any way

  • @ca3d00 OMG , you have solved the energy crisis , no one has EVER thought of that.

  • i couldnt agree more, ive spent almost 10 years out in the freezing cold, busting my ass, trying to make a decent living. while green liberals bitch and cry about carbon emmissions and set bombs in toms lake. flaring is a fact of life.

  • it is a waste, but these let off gases that are of too high a pressure to be safely contained in the system.. it's either waste some at the flare, or blow the whole damn facility off the face of the earth.. gotta weigh the options, ya know?

  • I am not sure where this video takes place but I know in Canada Gas flaring is monitored provincially, such as Albert you have to apply for flaring permits and submit well data to the government where they monitor your actions and inforce all regulations that work to reduce the amount of wasted product and increase the safety of the workers, public and environment, look into your Oil and Gas industry and learn some info before you take videos and judge

  • frac flow backs aside... H2S, should this well need servicing and it contains sour gas as they bleed pressure, pull swabs after killing the well etc. this sour gas is best burnt off on location then vented to atmosphere as it is extremely poisonous to you and your families especially if it is this close to your home, as I said their are a large number of circumstances

  • circumstances could involve frac flow backs (when a frac takes place they pump large amount of product down hole to stimulate or fracture the formation, boosting the production) some examples of frac products are Acid, Co2, N2, Sand, Frac Oil Etc. these products if not cleaned up properly and flown to a separator v.s. down a pipeline can have a larger impact and cause more money spent and more energy wasted, Washouts and corrosion can occur causing much more dangerous and wasteful situation,
