Ramon Bonachea, Cuban historian and one of the directors of Unidad Cubana, responds to recent changes in US policy towards Cuba made by the Obama administration concerning unlimited travel for Cuban-Americans.
Ramon Bonachea, who appears on the Radio Mambi (WAQI 710) show "Mesa Redonda" every Monday (6pm) has a very negative view of Cubans who supported the lifting of the travel restrictions. Polls indicate that most Cubans in South Florida who support free travel to the island tend to be those who migrated to the US after 1985.

According to Bonachea, "all these [Cubans] who have come recently" are "humiliated and complaisant" people who "are accustomed to bowing their heads before the [Cuban] tyranny."
In response to the recent changes in US policy towards Cuba, Bonachea remains "vertically opposed" and "intransigent" until the end. Bonachea states:
"With the enemy you do not negotiate. Against the enemy [you use] rebellion and insurrection [to achieve] the total cleansing of, from all levels of our homeland, those social parasites and invertebrate sociopaths that have bloodied Cuba from one end to the other.
"That is the position of the real fighters in Cuba, the position of the intransigent exile community and certainly the position that reflects the work of Unidad Cubana. We accept no less than total and absolute freedom. No less that implementing justice so that the crime will not repeat itself."
To begin rebuilding without first removing the filth and rubble of the past 50 years is akin to wearing fine-linen clothing immediately after feeding pigs without first bathing. Mathew 7:6 wisely says Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

One of the rights afforded by the United States constitution is our freedom to opine differently on the matter. Unfortunately, that is a freedom that will not be afforded to the people of Cuba until the Castros and their henchmen have released all power and faced justice. It will take more than their courage and the pebbles and stones that those inside the island could ever muster, say, from Cubas dilapidated buildings, to battle a ruthless and incredibly well-armed communist regime.

My focus is on the people of Cuba (in and out of the island) to chart a new path, and not on Castro's "evil mindset" or his "willingness to cooperate."
They (the Castros) are quite irrelevant in my analysis of US-Cuba relations. The goal is to act within the best means to foster an environment that best serves the people to again gain control over their government and their lives. And that applies to all people around the world.

Consequently, your statements, however well intentioned and hopeful they might be to you, fail to reflect reality and do not help, but work against the fabric of those inside and outside Cuba who desperately cry out to the international community to recognize Cuba as an island prison and assist us in bringing an end to Castros tyranny.

If there is one thing that history has taught us is never to underestimate the enemy, especially one as cruel as Cubas communist party. It is evident that although Castro himself is presently frail, the evil machine that he has assembled remains with ample strength to continue to oppress and repress any attempt to overthrow the regime by those who would dare to oppose it.

Understanding the evil mindset, tactics, and cruel actions taken by the Castro-led government is only the beginning and its crucial to securing his regimes defeat, while sending a desperate plea to men and women of good conscious in the international community to assist those inside and outside the island prison to topple his government and bring him and his henchmen to justice.

The personal tragedies and attempts against his government and life should have been enough for a sensible person to conclude that the premise of any dialogue with Castro can only come from the uninformed or the ill-intended.

The irrefutable evidence that stacks up against your claim of Castros willingness to cooperate on anything is insurmountable. Today, the built-in calendar inside every freedom loving Cuban marks 18,383 long days since Castro began his self-serving state of impunity for the crimes him and his inner-circle have committed against the countrys men, women, and children. Can you honestly believe that he will be willing to set aside that impunity with all the evidence against him?

Only an uninformed or ill-intention person would conceive of a tyrant like Castro would ever allow the people to dominate the discussion on rights and freedoms, as you have claimed. On a day like today, Castros government will again subjugates the people of Cuba to celebrate the former Soviet Unions May 1 celebration by mounting them on tracks as if they were cattle, as a reminder of his ruthless dominion over a nation.

I disagree with the first sentence. I believe people, regardless of the state system that controls them, always have the strength to eventually take control of their government.
There are countless examples across the globe showing that a repressive state and its propaganda apparatus cannot contain the grievances of the masses. But, the people of Cuba will chart their own destiny towards a more democratic society once the hostile environment of US-Cuba relations changes.
