I have a question: how do you get an untimed play when the penalty was on you and the clock ran out? I am just confused...

Rule 3-3-3 states:

A period must be extended by an untimed down, if during the last timed down of the period, one of the following occurred:

a. There was a foul by either team and the penalty is accepted, except for unsportsmanlike fouls, non-player fouls, and fouls that specify loss of down.

@MYFAGators don't the rules state that the game cannot end on a defensive penalty. If the offense commits the penalty and the clock is at zero, that should be the game. Probably gets more confusing on a change of possession play.
