Consumer Reports:
This crash test between a modern sedan and the classic 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air shows just how far passenger protection has come in the last fifty years. The Institute for Highway Safety staged the test to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

  • I don't care if it sucks at protecting you, the Bel Air just looks amazing, its a car to cruise around below 20 you're not supposed to "race" it

  • @MCor7e2 I havent seen any classics going over 40mph yet

  • Safety is for pussys drive a real mans car

  • "For the past 50 years, the Institute has made a real impact."

    I'll say.

  • @COMO10110 Dude your right, didn't see it the last time, but it should have not been that dusty, And you know it had an x frame eh?

  • Everyone here i hope knows 59' Chevys had X Frames which enabled supports on the sides. Their very dangerous because of this so of course it'd crumple, Even if it looked good. I own a old 66 chevy which has a box style frame. If you put my car against the malibu, i would be lookin at replacing a grill and a fender, possibly a rad: And i might have a broken nose cus no air bag, but i at least i know im driving away from this accident. :)

  • That's crazy, but you just ruined a classic car you could sell for thousands of dollars. No more of those are being made. What a shame:( still a cool crash test though

  • @COMO10110 Every car has its friend and its foes.

  • @COMO10110 I am going to be honest with you... new cars are much better engineered than older cars. On top of that, the cockpit cage is tons stronger on a new car, with substantially better a-pillars.

  • @COMO10110 You are assuming a head on collision. The crash test in this video is an offset collision (the most common type). The problem with full fram vehicle in an offset collision is the usually the frames are deflected and do not absorb any energy. This leave the thin sheet metal body of the car to be "sheared off" the frame. That is what you are seeing in this video.
