This a rather poor quality of a spitting cobra that I found in my house Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at approximately 11:23 a.m.

I went downstairs to wash the dishes and heard a sound behind me. Thinking it was my dog Chok in the trash again, I didn't turn around. I only said out loud, "Chok! Get the hell out of the trash!" but heard only silence. So, I turned around just in time to see the black tail of the snake disappear behind my makeshift bookcase I have on the floor holding my teaching materials.

I tried rooting him out, but figured..."If it's a cobra, I really don't want to be this close to it," so I just went upstairs and left it alone, hoping it would just eventually work it's way outside.

This is NOT the first time I've had a snake in the house. I live in the middle of a jungle in Southern Thailand. Precisely, a very overgrown fruit tree orchard. To date I've seen seven different cobras around here (all outside) and other snakes I couldn't identify. I've also seen a reticulated python that one of the villagers nabbed trying to eat his chickens. That damn thing was some eleven feet long!

I was on the computer upstairs and needed to pee. So, I turned around and very carelessly went tromping downstairs. Luckily for me, I happened to notice movement at the bottom of the stairwell and stopped about two feet before the landing. It's head was at that time under the first step, so I cautiously began stepping backwards until I got halfway up, then I grabbed a pair of my boxer shorts (not the ones I was wearing...heh, heh) and threw them down at the snake.

It immediately pulled out from under the first step tread, and reared right up, exposing it's hood and "spitting" into the steps and north wall. I was damn lucky, as I don't think it saw me. I continued backing up until I was back upstairs and grabbed my camera, putting it into movie mode.

It was a tad dark in the house per usual, as I only have a few windows and the cottage is surrounded by trees that block out the sunlight. But, you can definitely see the snakes hood pop out after I made some noise.

I was pretty pumped...believe me. Just the thought of being so close to something so deadly, pretty much got my hair standing on end. Finally the snake headed outside, then you hear me say, "Stupid dogs!" as they ran after the thing. Luckily for them (and me) they never found it.

This one was black with some markings on the back of the hood, which I couldn't see distinctly, but it also had some light yellow banding around the tail, that I saw when it hid in the bookcase.

Hope you enjoyed my video!

Jim

  • ur brave dude how do you not be afraid of a spitting cobra

  • @The704Jack Hey, thanks for commenting. I never said I wasn't afraid. Or if I did, what I meant was I was used to finding cobras and other snakes in my house. I have lived six years in this cottage and it's situated right smack-dab in the middle of the jungle. Actually I'm in the midst of a hill-top fruit orchard...Longan, Mangosteen, Lime, Pommello, Sataw (stink bean trees), Durian and a few Papaya and Jackfruit I've planted. So, I've got a healthy respect for the animals here! -Jeeem-

  • Where is this?

  • @757K ...Well, I don't know what exactly you mean by "What happened!" but if you mean about the dogs...nothing luckily. If you read my initial comment I wrote, you know I wasn't even sure the thing was a cobra at first, but I suspected it was from the black color. Here in Southern Thailand there really aren't that many "black" snakes with vague yellow markings around the tail except for a cobra like this one...

Luckily for me and the dogs, it finally left and went on it's way...
