It was better to stop the war then and there than to let it go on for a few more years, all in all there would have been more Japanese killed over the years if war had gone conventional all the way. @jptugagmr 30 years ago, under the USSR, nuclear war was almost imminent. Once Russia recovered its capitalistic past, tensions diminished. But, Russia and others are trying to reassert themselves and confront the US again and tensions have rised. As simple as that.
