A really great, virtuoso concert from the whole band! Lots of little surprises here, including a rare version of White Summer played by Jimmy at the end of Dazed And Confused! Immigrant song has some excellent war cries from Plant, but as usual in 1970 America, crowd troubles threaten the gig. In the middle of his solo in Heartbreaker, Jimmy stopped playing and Robert said: "Actually you can turn down the house lights now. Turn the lights off! Everybody sit still. Before we carry on, the lights go down. No listen, if we're gonna have a good time and you are, we're gonna have to work hand in glove with the so-called authorities. So, you sit down and they'll be cool and turn the lights off. So let's wait for them to turn off the lights." But authorities obliged so Plant said: "That's not a victory - that's common sense, so don't take it as a victory!" Pagey then continued his guitar solo.
My first Rock & Roll show!! What a way to start!! I remember what Robert said like it was yesterday. If I had any understanding of the world a would have watched more carefully.
Sorry about the spelling. Thank You!!
Steve
One of the first rock bands to play a 6 year old Maxwell Convention Center and deep in the heart of the conservative "bible belt" Led Zeppelin were greeted warmly by the capacity crowd, but no so much by the local authorities. Mid way into the set, arena management turned on the "house lights" allegedly because of widespread disregard for a selectively enforced "no smoking policy". There were a few scattered boo's as Robert announced that the band will not continue until the lights went down, a few moments later the lights went off to enthusiastic cheers and the show continued. In 1988 undercover Tulsa police officers arrested a record number of concert goers for minor possession charges at Roberts solo show. In a Tulsa World Interview TPD Spokespeople claimed that an unprecedented amount of resources had gone in to the effort and cited alleged incidents at the 1970 Led Zeppelin show as evidence that Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin fans were the "wrong element"
