CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Now is not the time to panic, But it is the time to be prepared. Power outages are likely to pop-up around the Tri-State once the ice begins to settle on branches and power lines. Duke Energy is prepping its crews so they can head out to make repairs. Right now, it's the calm before the storm but that doesn't mean crews with Duke Energy aren't hard at work. They're keeping their eye on where this snow , ice and freezing rain may hit. This, of course, is the type of weather event that definitely has the folks at Duke concerned. The snow is one thing and that's not typically a huge problem in terms of power outages. When you bring ice and freezing rain into the equation, that's when things get dicey.A heavy coat of ice can quickly bring down a power line or break large tree branches, knocking them onto power lines.Power outages aren't something duke officials are accustomed to predicting but in a storm of this potentially devastating magnitude a spike in outages is almost a foregone conclusion. We're checking supplies making sure the inventories are up, for anything you would need in a critical restoration period. At this point we're kind of in the wait and see mode, depending on when things happen. We'll keep crews on duty for us throughout the night, the overnight hours, certainly until we see what impact it's going to have on our system, says Sally Thelen, with Duke Energy.
