1956 China withdrew after the IOC recognized Taiwan, and continued to sit out the games until it emerged from the Cultural Revolution in 1980 > 7 Olympics!!! In December 1979, just 8 months before Moscow was to host the 22nd Olympiad, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Following a call by U.S. President Jimmy Carter for a boycott protesting this act, 65 countries withdrew from the 1980 Moscow Olympics, including the U.S., Canada, West Germany, Japan, China, Kenya and Norway.

i feel sorry for ignorant westerners, too lazy to find
out the truths and let their medias think for them.
chinese leaders are elected to serve only 2 terms, max.
public opinion seems paramount to them.
there are individual rights if you steer clear of sensitive
issues. remember, china is still changing, and changing
fast, these are unsettling times.
of coarse, china is not perfect.
hopefully, the olympics will also brings
positive changes as the chinese welcome the world.

thx for clearifying
Anyone who thinks that this is just Chinese uni students, think again. Australian-born, high school students and many White folk are getting involved; especially White academics and historians who actually know what happened in Tibet.
