According to Atrus, the Lesson Ages and their corresponding lessons are best learned in a particular order (Voltaic, Edanna, Amateria). In his journal, he says every Age begins with energy, for without energy there is nothing. Then as an ecosystem forms within the Age, nature stabilizes the system through mutually dependent and cooperative species. Finally, dynamic forces must be present in order to prevent the Age from becoming overly stagnant.

However, Saavedro comes up with his own order for the Lesson Ages; in fact, his order is the reverse of the one Atrus uses (Amateria, Edanna, Voltaic). For instance, he mentions the Lesson Ages in this order during his first monitor message. Here is an excerpt from his journal entry #10:

"I have desecrated the poem he placed in the columns. I could no longer stand to see Narayan's artistry in his worlds. I think I can do something with sap to cover the second one, but I'm not sure what to do about the island. I don't know how to alter the current... Maybe, if I introduce some of [Amateria's floating stone] to the soil on the island, it will interfere just enough to damage the last poem."

It appears he arrived at this order based on the manner in which he figured out how to tamper with the full symbols Atrus had placed at the end of each Lesson Age.

(As an aside, considering how Atrus gave away the full Narayan symbols to his sons, they wouldn't have necessarily needed to look up the translations before entering in the shield codes. That's not a very good way of testing comprehension if you ask me.)

  • In Edanna's first puzzle with the dry beanstalk, you truly see Nature encouraging mutual dependency. Here's how I think these plants would've worked originally (I think the sunshade plants weren't originally there):

The pod collects water, and deposits what it cannot drink for itself in the pod. When the sun rises high, the lense-plant focuses the sunlight, and the pod bursts open, sending the water onwards to the beanstalk. Thus one plant collects water for another with the help of a third.

  • @GalaxyGuy12 I considered mentioning that system because of the dependency there, but I couldn't figure out where the mutual element was.

  • anyone notice that the voltaic symbol looks like a man checking his muscles with his butt facing you?

  • @halfdude you made that sound cute >.>

  • I really enjoyed Myst III, but this intricate word puzzle really broke my 11 year old mind back in 2001. Unfortunately this is where the game ended for me.

  • The one for Love looks like two sperms being all affectionate and nuzzling eac hother... at least that's what it looks like to me. XD Kinda cute actually..

  • @XXxOPRIMExXX

Seconded. Riven's "grand puzzle" structure is simply mindblowing and that age is *full* of lovingly assembled and coherent details and features.

  • @battlebotsboy That information is a little outdated.

  • @XXxOPRIMExXX No, Dilandau300 (the other guy I assume) talked about how he and Shady have an agreement to separate the Myst LP's. Dilandau got Riven, Revalation, End of Ages and Uru, Shady got Myst and Exile. Try ThePhantomSafetyPin's Riven LP.

  • Ahhh, the ending approaches. This is just so intense!

And I see you took advantage of the ability to have videos longer than 15 minutes. Very nice.

  • @XXxOPRIMExXX You wouldn't happen to be talking about me, would you? ;-) Hehe...
