@beldog2 Probably a cheap display then. Decent screens report this to the OS when probed

@rasiakwood Intel is a great supporter of Linux except for the Intel GMA500 which was build by PowerVX or something, so that isn't actually Intel. I think you need to look for some workarounds since I have had no problems what so ever already back in 2007 on Ubuntu 7.10 with Dell D630 and X3100 with compiz and everything working like a charm. I played Counter Strike through Steam through Wine back then as well. No problems at all. I had one bug though. If using the VGA port I had to reboot :/

@Mantua64 Great support ? I know how this support looks - it is far from great and at the time i wrote those posts driver was so broken you couldnt watch youtube video on this card!
I dont know if they fixed x3100 because i bought X4500MHD laptop (just for HDMI output). And guess what - driver for this card also sucks. You must force brightness in terminal - it doest work with with any aplet (and this problem is at least year old still no fix). Also hd accelaration doesnt work.

@rasiakwood What's bullshit? Intel X3100 doesn't run any games worth mentioning so I don't know what you're talking about? And yes it has great support from Intel towards linux. Try with Intel 500 poulsbo chipset and you got yourself a crappy driver. Intel X3100 is PURE GOLD compared to Intel 500.

@DarksideEE7 I got a friend with a Mobility 3450 which plays Heroes of newerth perfectly in Wine, while Heroes of newerth in native Linux is really low fps. So I think it's more of an issue with specific cards like your 4870x2. My 4890 is capable of playing most games on Linux with wine and the Ati driver.
-
For WINE Direct 3d I'm shocked at how terrible ATI drivers are. If you look at the Bugzilla entries for Starcraft 2 every single fucking entry is referencing ATI cards. My 4870X2 is awesome in Windows, but a pain in the ass in Linux.

BULLSHIT.
I bought intel x3100 laptop because it was opensource. and what? driver is unusable!
You can sell this crap to someone who uses ubuntu.

You don't need to fix it... you need to choice more wisely your HW. What's the propose to buy a Hydrogen Car with the Hydrogen Station 400 miles away from your house?
Buy hardware from taiwanese company which only know windows and you'll how much help get to make *your* stuff whenever you want.
-
yeah you can fix it - we know how it worked for intel drivers haha :)
You use linux for 3 months or what? I used it for 10 years and it was always the same song - fix it yourself,
-
Strange, because it works perfectly with HUGE list of hardware than nvidia/microsoft whatever could even imagine.
Why just point lack of skill of the climber when you can easily say it the mountain made in the wrong way?
If you see something wrong in xorg, anyone with good skill can improve it. If something is wrong in payed work (with the money of the video board's customer), is just because *that* work is a crap.
Ok, I solved defining Modeline options directly in xorg.conf file.
I don't know, but fgrlx doesnt autodetect the optima modeline.
