Lou the Cockatoo

Lou is a 6 year old, male Umbrella Cockatoo. He recently underwent his 4th surgery for cloacal prolapse. The collar is on his head currently to keep him from picking his stitches. He was a severe feather plucker prior to his arrival at PEAR TREE, but his feathers have really filled in nicely since March 2007.

That's so sad. What is cloacal prolapse?

Birds only have one 'hole' that functions for reproduction and excrement - it is often referred

to as the vent area or cloaca. The cloaca falls out

partially when the sphincter muscles or 'vent' is

loose. This is a somewhat common problem seen

in the cockatoo species and often seen in female parrots that are producing too many eggs. I could

go into more detail - but I'm sure that would

bore you, lol. Lou's prolapse has been pretty

severe and therefore has been difficult to fix.

How does a male cockatoo get cloacal prolapse? Did it have something to do with his prior home, such as malnutrition or something? Or was he plucking at the vent area? Or did this just happen for no apparent reason?
