Canon says the 5D Mk III won't autofocus with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/8, but as you can see in this video it does work at least with the combination shown here.
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L II, Canon Extender 2x II, Kenko 1.4X PRO 300 Teleconverter DGX, and Canon EOD 5D Mk III.
