Rising

The configuration of planets is set to January 29, 3588AD. It is the eve of war between Earth, the superpower of the Solar System, and Mars, the rising power. Mars hears word of impending attack; choosing not to wait, the Mariner Fleet is rallied from its many locations throughout space, first to converge on Jupiter, then advance to Earth itself. A forward base is set on the Moon. Advance units are dropped in North America to contact friendlies there. The first landfall is west of the Hudson. One of the squads finds a placard, commemorating a Martian invasion from sixteen hundred years earlier. "We've been here before," a soldier jokes. His CO rolls her eyes and glances at the marker. "I'll tell him later, Orson," she says, and waves her commandos toward New York...
