He is still making a very valid point. US mainstream rappers have a huge following and need to widen the scope of their lyrics...

Not "always" and not "affluent." Those are the words you included. That aren't correct.

In this Right Guard sponsored video Chuck D talks about how hip-hop has been co-opted by corporations. You tell them from the back of your logo covered van! Yeah!

I would have to say that anyone who thinks Chuck D/P.E. have always appealed to a largely white crowd knows very little about hip hop in the 1980's and/or is probably too young to know any better (bless). Hey indifferent, ok fair point. You are though, missing out that PE were immense considering the topics covered, were aimed at inequality at black America. Internationally PE were accepted due to much broader bandwidth than mid America. Chuck D is highlighting that current rappers rhyme about wealth and not looking back at the poverty in the projects. Chuck is speaking the truth. Rappers like Kanye and Jay-Z are name-checking the name brands of their success - Hennys and Cokes and destroying a freaking Maybach in their video. Meanwhile, America is in a recession and most black youth can't get a decent job. I'm an affluent white Public Enemy fan that responds to Chuck D's music because, one, he has a commanding voice/great flow and, two, because his music reflects the real world - not some labelcentric look at how rich I am message.
