Eastern Washington University Director of Percussion Studies Michael Waldrop, D.M.A. performed "Rhythm Song" by Paul Smadbeck on January 13th, 2010 in the EWU Music Building Recital Hall.

Smadbecks Rhythm Song is the most performed and recorded piece in the solo marimba repertoire. It demands a high level of technique, rhythmic control and endurance from the performers. I created the accompaniment sequence in 2003 for this piece and it has received high praise from the composer himself. Smadbeck said after hearing my recording of this work that it is one of his three favorite recordings of the piece; very high praise considering that this piece has been recorded by many of the greatest marimbists in the world.
The piece is titled in full Rhythm Song (for one or more marimbas). This performance will be the first time that Ive performed the piece with a second marimbist and I am privileged to have one of my students accompany me on this piece: Heidi Kulvi.
