Stephen Foster was born on the same day that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died, the Fourth of July, 1826, to a prosperous and politically-connected Pennsylvania family. He went on to become the first well-known "commercial" American songwriter, that is, he signed publishing contracts for which he was sometimes paid royalties. In his later years, the hits dried up, and when he died from complications of alcoholism and maybe tuberculosis in 1864, he had 38 cents in his coin purse.
Almost makes me wish I still played chromatic ;). Seriously, Will -- that was really beautiful. Thanks.
