I was born and raised in Kentucky and grew up hearing people speak like this.
I have people ask me where I'm from and when I tell them they say they just love my accent.
However, when I start using technical terms and speaking intelligently, they think I'm talking down to them.
Oh well....

I have the self-same problem being from Scotland my accent is rather thick and heavy for some folks although I myself have never had had any problem understanding anyone, well, anyone who spoke some sort of English that is, suppose for some of us them's the breaks..... eh ??
