http://www.facebook.com/LauraBarberRileyArt Creation of an oil painting at speed! Best viewed in HD.

Dark winter days and dark horses don't make for the best photos on which to base a time lapse video but nevermind! I produced this video just for fun, it represents about 30 hours actual painting time, spread over several weeks. I started taking photos after the background colour and drawing had been done; a few little painting sessions were missed too due to forgetfulness and camera batteries dying but the bulk of the process is caputred here.

I had a wonderful time photographing two beautiful Friesian carriage horses last year, this is just one of my paintings based on them.

I work as an equestrian artist; as well as offering original works like this one for sale I also undertake commissions. You can find further information about my work on my website, or find me on Facebook.

  • I think its time to buy a lamp.. at first find a painting restorer and ask where you can get one

do you use black oil paint? or you mix the black?

  • @lakelet1 I definitely need a good lamp! I do very occassionally use a bit of black paint in my work but didn't use any in this painting, mainly used mixes of colours like burnt umber, french ultramarine and paynes grey (if memory serves!). It is interesting watching this video back a year down the line as I would approach it very differently now, have learnt a lot this year, hope I make as much progress this year too!

  • @LauraBarberRiley I wish you all the best for 2012

    what are your goals?

  • @lakelet1 thank you! 2012 goal is to get work accepted into a competitve non-equestrian open exhibition I think. Aiming to do lots more painting from life too, have reaped the benefits of doing more this year so aim to dedicate even more time to it in 2012 :-)

  • thants amazing love, well done

  • @thebrokenpuppet Thanks!

  • @CHloE748 I have only been painting since 2008 so not long really- practice makes perfect! I still have a long way to go to be anywhere near as good as I'd like but I learn with each painting I do :-)

  • first few seconds ... favorite! :)

  • This is amazing!

  • You paint really really nice! but just to give you a little qritique (Spell? im not the best on english)

I think you should look more on the proportions on a horse. on this picture i think the legs are a bit short the neck to thin and the head to bigg and the eye a little bit too small. I love your shadows tough. I really should not say anything cous i would ever be able to paint this nice.

    I love this drawing!

  • it´s soooo beautiful!! <3
