owning a gun isnt illegal in the UK but its is heavily resctricted to what you are allowed to have.

Normally, one of the officers in the car will have their radios switched to the local borough's station. If a call is dispatched involvong firearms and they are closer than the standard Armed Response Vehicles, they also have an armed capability and will therefore deal with the call. All police officers - despite which unit they are attached to - have a responsibility to deal with crime. Also, the senior officer in the control room may dictate who is sent to which calls....
