Iranian army crossed the border with Iraq

Cross-border skirmishes occasionally occur as Iraq's neighbors, Turkey and Iran, combat the PKK and PEJAK groups operating from bases in Iraq's mountainous north and northeast. Iraqi Kurds decline to recognize the PKK as a terrorist group, so designated by the Unite States and the European Union, and refuse to fight against the group, saying it is an internal Turkish matter.

Iran's army crossed the border into neighboring Iraq and shelled the Kandil Mountains in northern Iraq, where an outlawed anti-Iranian group linked with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has bases, reports in Iraqi Kurdish media said.

Iranian troops penetrated five kilometers into Iraqi territory causing massive material damage, report Iraqi-Kurdish groups on Internet sites, namely the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). "The Iranian army launched a full-scale war," a local official in the region was quoted as saying in the reports.
Iraqi Kurdish officials said hundreds of villagers fled their homes in the mountainous northeast earlier this week after what they said was days of intermittent shelling by Iran across the border. They also said they were investigating the authenticity of leaflets reportedly warning the villagers in the region to evacuate the area ahead of an Iranian military offensive against PEJAK, the Iranian arm of the outlawed PKK.

Iran denied knowledge on Wednesday of any leaflets and so far there has been no official comment from either Tehran or Baghdad about the shelling.

"These leaflets are aimed at creating concern among our neighbors, especially the Kurds living in northern Iraq, by means of propaganda and psychological warfare, if the leaflets even exist," Iranian government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham told reporters in Tehran.

Elham did not specify who he believed may be behind such propaganda warfare and did not make further comments about the situation in areas of northeastern Iraq bordering Iran. Residents said there were no identifying marks on the leaflets, written in Kurdish, apart from the words "The Islamic Republic of Iran" across the top and bottom.
