Cannes Jury Prize Winner of 2008, Il Divo is the latest gem by Paolo Sorrentino (The Consequences of Love). In an overture to Tarantino and Leone, the title sequence introduces real-life Italian politicians as gangster-like imitators clustered around the iconic post-war figure of Giulio Andreotti.

Prime Minister no less than seven times, the real Andreotti faced accusations of conspiracy, Mafia involvement and state terror, even standing trial in 1996. Yet here the labyrinthine machinations of Italian politics are used to explore the inscrutable personality beneath the controversy. Effortlessly stylish, with cinematography by Sorrentinos three times collaborator Luca Bigazzi, the film stars Toni Servillo (Gommorrah) as the chillingly vampiric Andreotti one half blood sucking fiend, the other deliciously deadpan svengali. It is hard to imagine what the real Andreotti will make of it but for the record, this is Italian cinema at its best.
