The cardstar app puts all your loyalty cards in the palm of your hand (assuming that hand is holding your smartphone). Cardstar reads the barcode and stores them where they can be scanned at the checkout counter just like you would your plastic card. Distributed by Tubemogul.
I use "Key Ring" app. It does the same job, plus it can be synced to the cloud and can be accessed through all your devices too (kind of a Dropbox for your cards). Available for all platforms as well.

If the scanner at the grocery store can't read the barcode just ask the cashier to type it in.

CardStar is a great concept, but certain places have trouble scanning the barcodes on the device. Particularly, flat bed scanners at grocery stores have trouble reading it. They tend to work better with the handheld scanners.
