@NobbysPcHelp Hard drives usually use a 3 coil stepping motor, so running it without the board would cause it to do... well... nothing. You'd have to build switching circuitry to make it run.

@STRIKER520 yes i would think it would be 12v but you may need a resistor not sure though

@NobbysPcHelp would not be hard since a computer only uses 3 voltages 3.3v ,5v and 12v just need to look up some specs.

maybe you could find out the voltage of the motor and power the motor directly to avoid the hdd shutting down
