Sheri Kent can't help but notice how Tommy talks about how "I.W." was there with him every day when he was in the hospital. When Sheri asks Tommy why he doesn't invite some of his other friends besides Iris to the barbecue, Tommy replies that all of his real friends are still in the hospital. Surprised, Sheri asks about his friends from school. Tommy tells his mother that his friends from school got spooked when he got sick because they couldn't understand that he wasn't contagious, so they never came to see him. Then he tells Sheri matter-of-factly, without any anger or bitterness, that she must be able to understand how the other kids feel because he spooked her so much that she had to leave town. Tommy continues, telling Sheri without any anger or bitterness that he talked to other kids with leukemia and their moms didn't split. He must have done something really bad to make Sheri leave. Sheri tells Tommy that she left because she thought it would be better for Tommy and Hank. Just the sight of Tommy hooked up to tubes made her sob, and the nurses thought it would upset him. Tommy shows a spark of anger as he replies that nurses don't know everything. Sheri says that she's not strong like Tommy and Hank, and if she had stayed, she thought they would see the situation as she did: hopeless. Sheri adds that she always panics, but that she knows now that running away is the wrong thing to do. When she says that when she left she did get a job so she could help out financially, Tommy again shows a spark of anger when he says that Hank didn't care about money. Tommy finally breaks down crying when he tells Sheri that his biggest fear was that he wouldn't see her before he died. Sheri starts crying at this as well, and that's when Hank and Iris walk in, all smiles, and see Tommy and Sheri crying together on the couch. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
