About the speech:

With G8 leaders pledging to conclude the Doha Round of trade talks in the World Trade Organisation, and President Obama stressing the need to integrate the poorest nations into the global economy during his visit to Ghana, international trade reform seems poised to receive another boost in agreeing upon a new multilateral trading framework.

Such negotiations are likely to be influenced global debate on climate change at the UN's COP15 in Copenhagen, including issues such as 'green barriers' to trade. Also shaping the agenda are the increasing dominance of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) states and the global financial crisis.

About the speaker:

David O'Sullivan is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and the College of Europe in Bruges. He began his career working for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland, before moving to the European Commission in 1979, where he has worked ever since.

Mr. O'Sullivan has held a number of senior posts, including Head of Cabinet for Romano Prodi while the latter was President of the European Commission and Secretary General of the European Commission. He is currently Director General of DG Trade, the European Commission's department for international commerce.

He speaks English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese. In 1999, David O'Sullivan was named 'European of the Year' by the Irish Council for the European Movement.
