Joshua was born with a condition called Gastroschisis, where the intestines stick out of the body through a hole on one side of the umbilical cord. When he was born he promptly received surgery where they pushed the intestines back in. He was a very brave and tough little man who had all his family and doctors very proud of how quickly he was recovering.
His recovery was interrupted by a virus he picked up. He was given a central line to rest his tummy. Joshua died from cardiac arrest due to a massive pericardial effusion because the doctors decided to use an incorrect cannula which pierced through his jugular vein and flooded his heart cavity.
This has left us with many questions which remain unanswered about his death. Including how they didn't pick it up. The police and coroners are involved due to the manner in which he died. The boss of the children's hospital has admitted that this should not have happened.
We will do everything in our power to make sure that the contributing factors to his death are thoroughly investigated so it doesn't happen to another little boy or girl.
