I can appreciate classicpop65's observation about Jack Jones. If you listen to Johnny Mathis, it's much the same thing. He doesn't reach for notes that he can't to anymore. You just admire the beauty that his voice has now opposed to longing for a sound that will never come back. It's amazing to hear guys like these sing so well into their 70s. Sinatra clearly couldn't do it.
classicpop65:I totally agree 100% with you my friend. This puts him in a class of own.Jack could take a song like Strangers in the Night and turn it around and give it more feeling and depth to the song.I love Sinatra version. But I loves Jack's version more his Vocal tone and Control ,Brilliant!..Marc Jones-Vocalist.
Hello classicpop65.I got came across your comment just now.I would have responded sooner, only if you would have click on reply glennmach comment. I would have gotten your message by YT E-mail..No Problem my friend. Its great to know that we both agree that Jack Jones has a blessed singing voice. & he has been like a teacher to me being in that vocal range..Marc Jones.
Jack Jones tore the house down on Jerry Lewis yesterday. His voice has changed and in some ways he is a more powerful singer than in days past. Lets face it, most of us can't sing like we use to...Sadly David Gates can't sing David Gates anymore - But Jack Jones is still cool and that is indeed, very cool.
In getting back to Jack's 60s voice, he definitely learned to USE it in every way possible. He tackled difficult melodies by gliding easily from baritone to tenor range. He used the sheer power and beauty of his voice to MOVE listeners - he never used it in any indulgent way, always with PURPOSE. And I've always felt that Jack got deeper into the emotional core of lyrics than Sinatra or Bennett did, especially since Jack's voice could project great tenderness. Such an AMAZING singing voice.
Marc:is there a technical name for the "new voice" Jack adopted in the 70s, with his mouth not open as fully, and singing more from his upper throat? It's not as dazzling as his original voice - it's less demanding, yet still packs the emotional punch. He's obviously smart about the notes he's still able to hold. I agree that Sinatra (and Bennett) stayed in the same style too long, often overreaching where their voices no longer could go. Still legends, but they sometimes embarrassed themselves.
He just keeps getting better....
