From Rights Action (http://www.rightsaction.org/video/ele... On January 8th and 9th 2007, hundreds of police and soldiers in Guatemala forcibly evicted the inhabitants of several communities who were living on lands that a Guatemalan military government had granted to Canadian mining company INCO in 1965. Local indigenous people claim the land to be theirs, and resent the exploitation of a foreign corporation. Canada's Skye Resources now lays claim to the land, and paid workers a nominal sum to destroy people's homes. With the force of the army and police, company workers took chainsaws and torches to people's homes, while women and children stood by. Skye Resources claims that they maintained "a peaceful atmosphere during this action."

... There is a basic human right.....the right to private property...
The more I think of it, the more I think this is ridiculous. Right to own?
Sincerely, do we own the planet? Don't we die someday and doesn't are ownership disapear immediately? There are no pessession, no security. We all die and that's it.
For the nomads living in America before the white man, alone with no possession was the mark of a strong man. Nowadays, if you don't own something, you're nothing! Isn't that stupid?

There is a basic human right.....the right to private property. If you want to be correct why you dont sell your house and your belongings and send the money to these people.....but I am certain that not going to happen cause you are bluffing.

What did that wishy washy maricon from the guerrilla do to protect his supporters in the countryside? Less than nothing. At least Otto Perez has some balls and might beat that country into shape.

People don't 'belong' to a country. We are all humans - and it does not stop being our responsibility to help others because they happen to live within imaginary lines that show a 'different country' from the one you live in. These are all of our issues. You cannot say no to transnational corporations, by the way - they kill, exploit, force themselves upon peripheral countries, and appeal to the wealthy elite to maintain the inequality and status quo.

Capitalism, neoliberalism = the enemy. They require the exploitation of peripheral countries.

You should read about capitalism first. It is not the enemy, neither is Canada. The Guatemalan government is the most at fault. It is their responsibly to protect its people, which they are failing to do.
GoldCorp is also at fault, just not as much.

I live in Guatemala. This is still happening and will get worse when Otto Perez Molina is elected president on Nov 11, 2011. He is a retired army general that killed and displaced many indigenous people - with the help of the US Government ........
