From Rights Action (http://www.rightsaction.org/video/elestor/): On January 8th and 9th 2007, hundreds of police and soldiers in Guatemala forcibly evicted the inhabitants of several communities who were living on lands that a Guatemalan military government had granted to Canadian mining company INCO in 1965. Local indigenous people claim the land to be theirs, and resent the exploitation of a foreign corporation. Canada's Skye Resources now lays claim to the land, and paid workers a nominal sum to destroy people's homes. With the force of the army and police, company workers took chainsaws and torches to people's homes, while women and children stood by. Skye Resources claims that they maintained "a peaceful atmosphere during this action."

  • What year was this in? Are there still injustices like this happening in Guatemala and other Central and South American countries due to these foreign corporations?

  • @Guateparasiempre1 This is still happening; if anything it is getting worse as global demand for gold and other metals increases.

  • @99cacahuate You should read about capitalism first. It is not the enemy, neither is Canada. The Guatemalan government is the most at fault. It is their responsibly to protect its people, which they are failing to do.

GoldCorp is also at fault, just not as much.

  • @zombiespooner67

If the Lord would help, this would never have happened :-(

  • I live in Guatemala. This is still happening and will get worse when Otto Perez Molina is elected president on Nov 11, 2011. He is a retired army general that killed and displaced many indigenous people - with the help of the US Government ........

  • Too bad, If Guatemala would become part of Mexico then The Mexican Government could improve the lifestyle of the people and ensure their rights.

  • viva mi gente indigena de este nuestro continente.....muera le blanco ladron y asesino...

  • Yes, INCO is guilty for taking people homes but more importantly, why isn't the Guatemalan government doing anything about it?! Ultimately, it is their responsibility to defend their people and say no to this corporation.

  • this is the MONROE DOCTRINE at its best. the documnet written by the U.S.A for helping central/south America including the Carribean Islands the backyard of the north American empire. meaning hey its our backyard lets just go out back and pick out fruits and whatever else we want. and yes it favors the eurocentric country of canada
